This school in San Pedro is the oldest school we support. It was constructed by work teams in the early 1990’s. It holds two sessions a day and has about 300 students. The students come from Haitian homes in a barrio just outside the city. There families are the poorest anywhere nearby. The government operated a sugar refinery in the city but that closed in 1995. Since then sugar cane growth in the area has declined and unemployment among the Haitians is very high.
This school cannot make it on its own. Education of the children living in the barrio is vital to their being able to find employment in the city.
