MALNUTRITION PREVENTION PROGRAM
LA ROMANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
$6 per child per year or
$600 for 100 children per year
Proper nutrition is crucial for the growth and development of the brain and body, especially during the age of 1-5 years. Impoverished children living in the bateyes have a particular predisposition for malnutrition since they are no longer breast fed, and bottle formulas, if available, are usually too costly to purchase. When the children begin to crawl and play on the ground, they pick up contaminated food and dirt particles and put them in their mouths. It can be assumed that all of these children are vitamin deficient as well as having serious intestinal parasite infestation. The parasites compromise the nutritional status by consuming much of the food ingested, particularly protein.
The Village Presbyterian Church has funded a Malnutrition Program under the umbrella of The Good Samaritan Hospital for the last 2 years. Over 600 children are enrolled in this program at the present time. Dr. Adrianna, from the hospital, supervises a malnutrition coordinator who tracks these children monthly. Quarterly reports are sent to Village Church for review and accountability. Now that we have successfully worked out the program protocol, it is time to expand it to include another 600 children. We invite you to play a significant role in protecting additional children from malnutrition by being a part of this program.
The Malnutrition Protocol calls for giving a dose of piperazine (deworming meds) every three months and a half of a chewable polyvitamins with iron & fluoride every day. Using this formula, research indicates we can prevent malnutrition in children between one and five years of age for a very nominal cost of $6.00 per child per year. Please join us in buying precious time needed for the children suffering from malnutrition under 5 years of age in the Dominican Republic.
