For what seems like forever we have been shoveling sand up to the second floor. Last year, as many of you know the job was finished, murals were painted on the walls of the pediatric unit, and doctors offices were opened, What was not as highly noticed is the new patient care rooms that now occupy the entire eastern side of the hospital. These rooms are vital to the financial well being of the hospital. Typically patients staying overnight require limited services adding much needed revenue to the bottom line. But there’s a challenge keeping the rooms full. They are inaccessible to those patients needing them the most because there is no way to confor mably transport them up the stairs. To remedy this construction teams focused on building an elevator shaft that now extends two floors above the second floor. This was done to provide access to these floors in the future. We have been in discussion with our architects both in La Romana and the US and have an elevator design that is both practical and economical for our purposes. Thanks goes out to all those that braved the day time sun. This project was the largest undertaken since the decking for the second floor was completed. It required long days of strenuous work by all that participated. Finishing the elevator shaft is the first step in completing the project. It is that portion of the project that we have always been able to complete in the timeframe we set up for our selves because it consisted of several small projects that fit into the budget of each group. The difficult part comes next as we need to raise the necessary funds to purchase the elevator car, the electric motors, the hydraulic pumps and cylinders and the electric controls necessary. The estimated cost, including labor is over $100,000US. As mentioned earlier, the success of this project brings with it the stabilization of the hospital operating budget. With the implementation of the Social Security program, and the ability for more people to afford overnight hospitalization. Please support this project by making a going to the donation page and making a gift. You can type in Elevator on the Item line to direct your gift. Thanks.
